LeROY, N.Y. (WIVB) - A father and son have been charged with trying to steal scrap metal from an auto yard in Genesee County.

Troopers were called to Bergen Auto Recycling in LeRoy on Saturday and found 44-year-old Robert Knight of Rochester trying to steal the scrap metal by hiding it in the trunk of his car and attempting to leave the property. Employees detained Knight until State Police arrived.

Police say while interviewing Knight, he used a false name. As a result, he's charged with second degree criminal impersonation as well as petit larceny, probation violation, and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Knight's son, 18-year-old Robert Knight, Jr. was driving the vehicle and was issued several tickets, including unregistered motor vehicle, uninsured motor vehicle, switched plates and operating a vehicle without a driver's license.

The young Knight was released to answer the tickets. His father was taken to the Genesee County Jail on $1,000 bail.
