ARKWRIGHT, N.Y. (WIVB) - A sexual predator who's been on the run for five years is back behind bars, thanks to America's Most Wanted and a tip from a western New Yorker.
Joseph Chapman's freedom ran out Sunday night in Chautauqua County. A woman who saw Chapman's picture on the TV series America's Most Wanted called police, who tracked him down and took him into custody peacefully at a home in Arkwright.
Chapman has been on the run since 2007, when he escaped from a work detail at the McKean County Correctional Facility. He was serving time for a parole violation tied to sexual assault of a child.
NYS Police Senior Investigator Greg Holt said, "We're thankful for the woman who made the phone call and just shows that when the community offers us some information and we act on it what we can do. I mean, the bottom line is that a child rapist is off the streets now and is in jail where he belongs."
Pennsylvania State Police and federal marshals will return Chapman to McKean County this week. In addition to escape charges, he's also expected to face new charges of child sexual assault.
