Distracted driver flees, crashes again

GAINESVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - Deputies say a woman distracted by a cell phone before her first crash Tuesday morning. And when she crashed a second time, deputies say she was speeding.

Authorities say 25-year-old Shayla Hernandez crashed her car on East Mill Road in Gainesville around 4 a.m. Tuesday morning while distracted by a cell phone, striking two vehicles parked in driveways. Deputies say she sped off from the scene and wound up hitting a guardrail on Route 19. After the second crash, deputies say Hernandez took off on foot and called for a friend to come get her.

The person who picked Hernandez up drove her to the scene where police say they found her.

The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office has charged Hernandez with texting behind the wheel, moving from lane unsafely, two counts of leaving the scene of a property damage accident, speed not reasonable and prudent, and failure to keep right. She will appear in court at the end of the month to answer the charges.
