Feds seek patients of arrested doctor

MEDINA, N.Y. (WIVB) - An emergency room physician has been arrested and charged with possessing crack cocaine.

Inside the criminal complaint, News 4 learned that 62-year-old Dr. Daniel Gillick admitted to using crack cocaine and injecting powder cocaine on Monday, as well as using drugs for the past two years.

Federal agents were tipped off earlier this month about Dr. Gillick's alleged actions. Agents put his home on Main Street in Youngstown under surveillance and Tuesday pulled over his live-in girlfriend, 27-year-old Christine Guilfoyle, who was driving his Jeep Cherokee.

In the Jeep, agents say they found crack cocaine. And according to the criminal complaint, Guilfoyle told authorities the doctor would give her money to buy cocaine, crack cocaine and heroin. It goes on to say Guilfoyle would then bring the drugs home to share with Dr. Gillick.

Agents obtained a search warrant for Dr. Gillick’s home, and inside they say found a plastic tube often used to smoke crack cocaine.

Dr. Gillick worked as an ER doctor for both Medina Memorial and Schuyler Hospitals. The question now is whether he was ever under the influence while on duty.

U.S. Attorney William Hochul said, "Fortunately, all of these instances are rare, but one this case says is that when we get allegations on this kind of conduct by persons in sensitive positions, like emergency room doctors, we will do everything we can to run these allegations to the ground as quickly as we can."

Federal investigators have taken away Dr. Gillick's license to get prescriptions and it will be up the State Health Department to decide his future. The health department tells News 4 the doctor has not been sanctioned or disciplined in the past, and said no comment can be released regarding a possible investigation.

Medina Memorial Hospital has launched an internal review to ensure patient care was not compromised. The hospital noted that Dr. Gillick is not their employee. He is employed by Delphi Emergency Physician Services, which contracts with their facility.

Bond was set at $5,000 for Dr. Gillick. Federal agents are looking to speak to his patients if they suspect he was under the influence and affected their medical treatment. You can call the DEA at 846-6000.
