JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) - A veteran Jamestown police detective, who resigned in the wake of an evidence tampering investigation, has been charged in the case.

The Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office says 39-year-old Eric Corey has been charged with one count of misdemeanor official misconduct in the City of Jamestown. The DA’s Office says an internal investigation revealed multiple cases of missing prescription painkillers from the police department’s evidence room.

In September, the detective turned in his badge . The 14-year veteran of the force was in charge of the police department's evidence room.

The investigation into Corey's actions partially led to a plea deal for accused sex offender Eric Chant, who could have faced life in prison. In the plea, Chant pleaded guilty to raping a young girl and received 25 years behind bars.

Chant was supposed to be sentenced Monday, but sentencing was postponed until February.
