BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A man pleaded guilty Friday to attempting to rob five University at Buffalo students last year shortly after he had been released from prison.
Antoine Matthews is a convicted burglar and violent felon who had been out of prison for just two weeks when he attempted to rob three students last November. The 23-year-old brandished what looked like silver revolver and demanded money before fleeing on foot.
Around 30 minutes after the first robbery attempt, Matthews approached two more UB students and attempted to rob them. He was identified in a lineup arranged after he had been linked to the first robbery attempt.
When authorities caught up to him later that same evening, they discovered Matthews was using a toy gun to try to rob the students.
Matthews pleaded guilty to two counts of second degree attempted robbery. He will be sentenced May 1 and faces a maximum sentence of seven years in prison for each count. He also faces additional prison time for violating his parole.
