BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The former head of Buffalo's Office of Strategic Planning has admitted using his position of power to steal funds during his five years in office.
Timothy Wanamaker, 47, pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing from programs receiving federal funding. Wanamaker served as executive director of the Office of Strategic Planning from 2004 to 2008, and supervised both the Buffalo Economic Renaissance Corporation (BERC), holding the title of President, and the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency.
Prosecutors say Wanamaker improperly used a credit card from BERC for his own personal lodging, car rentals, entertainment, and other costs for family and guests. He used the card during trips to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., and Miami. Authorities say he misappropriated around $30,000.
Wanamaker will be sentenced in March and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
