"Granny Law" a focus in Wal-Mart attack

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Batavia woman accused of punching an elderly Wal-Mart worker in the face will be prosecuted under New York's new "Granny Law."

The Batavia Daily News reports Jacquetta Simmons is the first person in Genesee County to face charges under this law, which makes it a felony to assault and injure someone 65 or older. The law lessens the burden on prosecutors who take the case to trial.

Police say Simmons slugged a 70-year-old store clerk on Christmas Eve when she asked to see Simmons' receipt as she left the store.
