BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Erie County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate was inadvertently released from the Alden Correctional Facility, Thursday. The Sheriff's Office says the inmate was taken back into custody without incident Friday afternoon, on Buffalo's east side.
Thirty-two-year-old Awet Gebreyesus, of Buffalo, is accused of a stabbing at Wegmans on Amherst Street, in Buffalo. The suspect was indicted on attempted murder by a grand jury.
Gebreyesus was initially charged with assault of his domestic partner. According to the Sheriff's Office, the release occurred after a clerk misread paperwork. The clerk didn't read attached documents to the paperwork, that indicated that he was indicted on attempted murder, arraigned and ordered held without bail.
Gebreyesus is at the Erie County Holding Center. There is an internal investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Division of Professional Standards.
