ARGYLE, N.Y. (AP) - A 52-year-old Washington County man faces animal cruelty and abandonment charges after an elderly dog was found along a rural road with its front legs, back legs and muzzle secured by duct tape.

State Police say a veterinarian determined the 13-year-old, large mixed-breed dog had late-stage cancer, and it was euthanized.

Shane Morehouse of Fort Edward was charged with two misdemeanors Saturday.

State Police say Morehouse's friend, Louis Hart of Hudson Falls, said he asked Morehouse to take the dog to Argyle, 52 miles north of Albany. It's unclear what he told Morehouse to do with the dog.

Trooper Kevin Saunders said Morehouse admitted binding and leaving the dog on the roadside. He told police he believed someone would find it.
