BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) - Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown announced Monday, an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting of an 82 year old Buffalo man that occurred late last May at the Maryner Homes on the City’s West Side.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said Homicide Detectives have arrested Bangaly D. Chelley, 28, of Buffalo and charged him with murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the death of Ansumane Kanneh.

Detectives say Kanneh was outside of his home, fixing his 7 year old granddaughter’s bike, when he was struck by a stray bullet on May 28, 2011.

“This case was truly one that stung the community,” said Mayor Brown. “This was the life of an innocent man, lost to a senseless crime. As I said to the family shortly after this tragic incident, we would not stop as a city, a community, and as a police department until we found the perpetrator of this horrible incident. I want to thank the tireless work of Buffalo Homicide Detectives who have been investigating this case for the past 9 months.”

Detectives arrested Bangaly Sunday morning at 11:30 while he was riding in a cab near West Ave. and Vermont St.

Chief of Detectives Dennis J. Richards said, "Buffalo Homicide detectives worked closely with the District Attorney's office in order to bring about the arrest of the suspect late Sunday morning. This is a case in which not only information from the public, but a unified effort from police officers and investigators within the Buffalo Police Department, led up to the suspect being taken into custody. Information was relayed to the Homicide Squad detectives from the Central District, Mobile Response Unit, Violent Crime Impact Team and the Narcotics Squad, all of which led to Bangaly Chelley being charged with this senseless murder."

Detective Sergeant James Lonergan led the investigation. He was assisted by Detectives James Lema, Reginald Minor, and Salvatore Valvo.
