CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) - An Amherst man was arrested by Erie County Sheriff's deputies Monday afternoon after Wal-Mart personnel say he cut open packages in the store and tried to steal merchandise.
Around 2 p.m. at the Wal-Mart on Transit Road in Clarence, employees spotted the man opening packages and trying to hide the items on his person. Deputies responded and quickly found 27-year-old Jay Kenneth and placed him under arrest. Authorities say surveillance video clearly showed Kenneth's actions.
After placing him under arrest, deputies also found prescription drugs on Kenneth that did not belong to him. He has been charged with fourth degree criminal mischief, seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, attempted petit larceny, and possessing a controlled substance outside of an original container.
He was taken to the Holding Center pending arraignment.
