Man charged in violent home invasion

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo man has been indicted on charges related to a violent home invasion in the city where a woman and her child were attacked, and two other children were threatened.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Marvell Belton, 30, is facing three counts of first degree burglary, two counts of second degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Belton, who was recently paroled for a 2004 violent felony conviction of first degree attempted robbery, is now charged in a violent home invasion on Clay Street last December.

Belton is accused of breaking into an apartment armed with two knives and attacking a woman and her 16-year-old child. Two other children between the ages of 10 to 17 hid in a closet. While Belton allegedly attacked the woman and her child, the children fled the home and sought help at a neighbor's. Authorities say Belton ran after them and broke out the windows of the home they were hiding in, threatening them.

Belton then allegedly ran to his brother's home, also on Clay Street, where authorities say he changed his clothes and hid behind a dresser, still clutching the knives used in the attack.

If convicted of the charges, Belton could face up to 25 years behind bars.
