MALONE, N.Y. (AP) - A 36-year-old northern New York man has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison for raping a little girl starting when she was in first grade.

Joseph Greenwood of Brushton was sentenced Monday in Franklin County Court. He'll also serve 15 years of post-release supervision and pay a $5,000 fine.

Prosecutors say Greenwood sexually abused the child and warned her that he would kill her if she told anyone. When she did tell her mother, prosecutors say the woman didn't believe her and punished her.

The girl, who turned 10 in June, told her mother about the abuse again and the mother took her to a hospital for an exam. That's when authorities contacted the state sex-abuse hotline.
