JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) - Police say a man went to great lengths to try and avoid being arrested, including crossing a river and hiding in a dumpster.
Two Jamestown Police investigators on a break around noon on Thursday noticed Pedro Nieves acting suspiciously near East 2nd and Tiffany. Nieves apparently ran in front of traffic, nearly causing an accident, and that's when investigators approached him.
Police say Nieves gave a fake name and again fled towards traffic. When investigators tried to stop him, authorities say Nieves fought with officers and fled on foot. Nieves reportedly ran down two streets and then ran behind a business and into the Chadakoin River. He crossed the river and attempted to hide in a dumpster on East 2nd Street, but that's where police say they found him and took him into custody.
Officers say it turned out Nieves has five outstanding warrants, one for criminal trespass, two for failing to appear, one for fourth degree criminal mischief, and a fifth for third degree assault.
As a result of Thursday's incident, Nieves was additionally charged with third degree criminal mischief, second degree assault, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, and second degree criminal impersonation.
Nieves was taken to the Jamestown City Jail pending arraignment.
