GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - A 30-year-old man has been arrested for brazenly robbing and terrorizing an elderly woman on Grand Island multiple times.
Erie County Sheriff's deputies say Justin Slaiman of Grand Island repeatedly went to the woman's home on East River Road for several weeks and stole items and then sold them to local pawn shops. At one point in mid-August, before authorities arrived, deputies say Slaiman used a ladder to climb into the woman's home in broad daylight, gaining entry by prying open a window. The elderly woman was unable to stop him, and authorities say Slaiman boldly grinned at her as he made off with her belongings.
But deputies caught up to Slaiman last Friday, charging him with burglary, attempted burglary, grand larceny, third degree criminal mischief, burglary with intent to commit a crime, fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools. He remains in jail until his felony hearing on Wednesday.
Authorities say Slaiman is a prime suspect in several other burglary cases on Grand Island since March and more charges are pending.
The items Slaiman allegedly stole from the elderly woman include military memorabilia and other irreplaceable, sentimental artifacts.
