BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Buffalo man who tried to mail envelopes containing baby powder to two large U.S. banks as a "prank" was sentenced on Monday.
On November 1 of last year, 30-year-old Cory Keny placed two envelopes in a mailbox at Daemen College. When a letter carrier picked up the mail, a puff of powder came out of the envelopes and authorities were called in to investigate.
Kent was later arrested and told police he was trying to emulate a YouTube video from the Occupy Wall Street group that urged followers to mail pre-paid envelopes received from banks back to the institutions stuffed with additional items in order to increase their costs.
For perpetuating a hoax by mailing a threatening envelope, Kent was sentenced to five months detention in a halfway house, followed by five months home detention. Prosecutors say at sentencing, Kent admitted his actions were "idiotic."
