Man waiting for sneakers fatally shot

GATES, N.Y. (AP) - A pair of robbers shot and killed a 19-year-old man waiting outside a suburban Rochester store to buy a pair of newly released sneakers, police said Friday.

Several people were lined up outside a closed store in the Chili Hinchey Plaza in the town of Gates around 4 a.m. Friday waiting to buy a new, high-end sneaker by Nike.

Police say two suspects approached the customers in line and demanded cash at gunpoint. The pair stole cash and property from several people before allegedly shooting Montre T. Bradley.

Officers found Bradley with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of the strip mall. Bradley died after being taken to a local hospital.

Relatives told the Democrat & Chronicle of Rochester that Bradley had saved enough money to buy the $220 pair of Nike Foamposites by working as a kitchen porter at a local hospital.

"This was a 19-year-old man (who) was killed because they were trying to steal his money," said Gates Police Chief David DiCaro. "All he was trying to do was buy a new pair of shoes. It is a tragedy."

One suspect was caught in Rochester Friday afternoon after a police chase, the other was still being sought.
