HOLLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - Erie County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident in the Town of Holland that took the life of a former fire chief.
Max Barron, 89, was Holland's fire chief in the 1980s and was a respected mentor to many firefighters. Barron was killed around 10:20 a.m. on Thursday when he was hit by 19-year-old Harley Teluk while crossing South Protection Road in front of his home.
Capt. Ron Kenyon said, "We're not sure why [he was crossing the road]. Possibly a mailbox, possibly to his garage."
Barron was pronounced dead at the scene. He lived alone, but his son lives next door.
Capt. Kenyon said, "It's a tragedy on both parts. This young girl didn't seem to be doing anything criminal, but again the investigation is still starting."
Following an initial investigation. officials say it appears Teluk didn't see Barron for some reason. So far, she is not facing any charges.
