JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) - Officers investigating a burglary ended up arresting another man they say was trying to evade detection.
Jamestown Police were called to Franklin Street at 7 p.m. on Thursday on reports of a burglary. Officers were speaking to the homeowner when a woman came down the stairs of the residence and told officers an unknown male was on the second floor.
Police searched the home and detained the man, whom they found by the back door. After identifying him as 21-year-old Jason James Benton, they took him into custody.
Though police say Benton had nothing to do with the burglary, apparently, when Benton saw a marked police car coming down the street, he tried to hide from officers in the same home that a burglary was being reported at. Officers say Benton has two outstanding bench warrants out for his arrest.
He has now been additionally charged with second degree criminal trespass and is locked up on the city jail.
