ALBION, N.Y. (WIVB) - Police break their silence about the death of an Orleans county teenager.
Investigators in Albion are shedding more light on the puzzling disappearance and murder of Katherine Sanchez.
The Press Conference on the case was held at Albion Police Department at 5:30 PM and new information was made available on the death of Katherine Sanchez.
Police tells News 4 that Sanchez was found in a shallow grave in an apple orchard in the Town of Ridgeway.
We are told she was killed and the last night she was seen was January 14th and we are also told she was killed that same night.
We now know that Carlos Cardenas is the suspect. He has been charged in her murder. He is also her brother-in-law and Sanchez was at his house babysitting.
January 14th was the last night she was seen.
Police tells us news of her disappearance would have hindered her investigation, keep that in mind because Sanchez went missing January 14th but it was not until February 18th that we released an official statement announcing that she was missing.
It was Friday night, February 18th, that her family got a knock on the door saying that Carlos Cardenas, her brother-in-law was arrested and charged with her murder.
Sanchez's mother tells us that at some time weeks ago, she found blood in Cardenas' apartment and raised that concern to Police and told them she was concerned that foul play was involved.
She tells us that Police just brushed off her concerns.
Albion Police Chief , Dean London gave his response to that, by saying, "I am going to again just state that we have collected evidence and I won't get into what evidence we have in ways that would hinder our investigation or prosecution. I can tell you that we have been investigating this from the moment she went missing."
News 4's Tricia Cruz spoke with the family Saturday and they do not believe that Police took their concerns seriously.
Police do tell us that another reason they thought that announcing Sanchez was missing would hinder the investigation is because according to them they thought Cardenas was a possible flight risk because he is in this country illegally.
