Summit Park Mall building flooded

WHEATFIELD N.Y. (WIVB) - Flooding has caused up to $1 million in damage to the building that used to be the Summit Park Mall.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff's office, a deputy on routine patrol noticed water coming from the former Steve & Barry's location at the building on Williams Road in Wheatfield.

Once police got inside, they saw much of the mall with 4 to 6 inches of water on the floor.

In their investigation, deputies found a hatch open.  They say that indicated someone was trying to get inside, or actually got in.  It was after that, they say, three water lines froze, then burst.

The mall has been mostly vacant for years, and police say they've answered numerous trouble calls there.  Deputies tell News 4 thieves have taken copper there in at least one earlier incident.

Several stores still operate on the mall property, including Save a Lot and The Bon Ton, but those stores were not affected.
