SALAMANCA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A former teacher who sexually abused a student will never teach in New York State again.

Shane Riethmiller agreed to surrender his teaching license as part of his guilty plea Monday to sex abuse charges, including felony dissemination and misdemeanor sex abuse. Prosecutors say he had sexual contact and sent explicit text messages to a 15-year-old female student last year while teaching and coaching girl's soccer in Salamanca schools.

MORE | Riethmiller caused a stir when he was appointed to the district office as his court case continued. He later resigned

Cattaraugus County District Attorney Lori Rieman said, "The parents of this victim assumed they could trust this person. He's a teacher. He's a soccer coach. But unfortunately there's people like that everywhere and you just can never know. You just can't be too careful it seems."

Riethmiller will be sentenced January 22. He faces up to six months in jail and 10-years probation.
