Teen bicyclist hit, killed in Lancaster

LANCASTER, N.Y. (WIVB) - Lancaster Police say they've caught the 23-year-old driver who allegedly hit and killed a teen bicyclist late Thursday night, then drove off.

A 14-year-old boy on a bicycle was killed, after Lancaster Police say he was hit by a vehicle. The driver never stopped. It happened just before 9 p.m. Thursday, on Lake Avenue near Sagebrush Lane in Lancaster.

The teen was rushed to Sisters of Charity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators say a witness to the accident followed the driver and called police, leading to the quick arrest.

“The greatest thing here is that we had a neighbor that was concerned enough that he wanted to get involved, and he followed the vehicle, and assisted us in locating,” said Lancaster Police Lt. Ronald Rozler.

Lancaster Schools Superintendent says the teen was a student at Lancaster Middle School. The superintendent says crisis services will be at the school Friday.

It's still early in the investigation, and police are looking at alcohol as a contributing factor in this crash.

“It's a devastating accident, to have somebody so young, just out on a bicycle with one of his friends, ya know, and he gets struck by a vehicle,” said Rozler.

The accused driver will be arraigned in Lancaster Town Court Friday morning.
