Cheektowaga student tweets bomb threat

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A 14-year-old boy cracked a joke on Twitter, but police weren't laughing and placed the teen under arrest.

The freshman at Cleveland Hill High School in Cheektowaga sent out a message on Twitter around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night that read: "I'm about to bomb Cleve Hill." A mother of one of the people who saw the tweet notified police.

Though the teen deleted the tweet three minutes later, around 100 other students had already received it. Police went to the teen's home and spoke to him and his mother. Officers also searched the teen's home, but found nothing suspicious.

Police say the teen told officers that the tweet was meant to be a joke, but that he deleted it minutes later because he knew it was wrong.

The boy was arrested and is being charged as a juvenile with making a terrorist threat and first degree falsely reporting an incident, both D felonies. The FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force were also notified.

Cheektowaga Police stress they thoroughly investigated this incident and firmly believe there was never a threat to students. School administrators and police say that though this was meant to be a joke, any type of threat will be taken seriously.
