FORT ERIE, ONT. (WIVB) - Niagara Regional police have busted a cross border cheese smuggling ring.
Three men, including a police officer, have been arrested and charged with bringing cheese into Canada without declaring it or paying duty.
The cheese products are the type used in pizza restaurants and prices in Canada are considerably higher than they are in the U.S.
The probe revealed over $200,000 worth of cheese and other products were purchased and distributed to various restaurants netting a profit of more than $165,000.
Officers say the investigation has been ongoing since January.
Those arrested and charged are Scott Heron 39 yrs, Casey Langelaan 48 yrs, and Bernie Pollino 44 yrs. Scott Heron is a Constable with the Niagara Regional Police Service. All are residents of Fort Erie.
