Auto group helps fight cancer with cars

CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) - A Clarence auto group is joining the effort to raise money to fight cancer.

The Smith family says it's dealt with cancer first hand. Now they're taking action to help treat it, catch it, even cure it.

Last month, Dave and Joe Smith started "Cars for Cancer." They pledged $50 from the sale of each vehicle at their dealerships to support cancer research. The brothers operate Dave Smith Ford in Williamsville, and David Chevrolet-Buick in Niagara Falls.

In one month, that pledge netted more than $13,000 for Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The people who bought those cars built up that total, and were put on a list in the Dave Smith Ford Showroom.

Smith said, "We asked our customers where they would like their donation, you know what form of cancer meant the most to them, where we're donating, to cancer, pancreatic cancer, (prostate) cancer and childhood cancers."

Smith says Roswell Park is a great research institution, which made their decision to help support the institute an easy one.
