Bullies taunt teen after brother's suicide

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB) - Bullying appears to have no boundaries at a Williamsville high school. Jamey Rodemeyer suffered through years of bullying until he took his own life. Now his family is being victimized after his death.

The parents of Jamey Rodemeyer are telling the country through television appearances in New York that their son was bullied even after his death and that his sister, Alyssa, was subjected to vicious taunting.

Alyssa's classmate, Yale Fried, said, "I saw Alyssa crying. I saw several girls crying."

Alyssa Rodemeyer had been with her friends during the first night of Williamsville North's homecoming, the first night of her brother's wake, when people say something terrible happened.

"A few people said a girl had come over and said some very, very hurtful things, saying, 'I'm glad he's gone,' all these kinds of things," said Fried.

Alyssa told her parents, who are now telling the story to national television audiences.

Alyssa's mother, Tracy Rodemeyer, said, "And then the bullies that put him into this situation started chanting, "You're better off dead. We're glad you're dead," and things like that, and my daughter came home all upset."

Investigators need hard evidence to lead them to those who may have tormented Jamey and now his sister as well. Possible charges, if the evidence warrants it, could include harassment or aggravated harassment.

Amherst Police Capt. Michael Camilleri said, "The aggravated harassment would be over the computer, over the telephone, or maybe text message. That would be the difference between what happened as far as aggravated versus harassment. Most of the harassment section is going to be the stuff that happened in person."

At Williamsville North things are not the same, says Fried.

"People are angry and people have a lot of emotion at this moment, and they're taking it out in various ways," said Fried.
