GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) - There's a huge turnout on Grand Island where voters are deciding whether or not to reduce the number of people representing them.
Residents on Grand Island are really split on this issue. It was obvious by the number of people we spoke to on and off camera on Friday.
And it's obvious when you see the signs for and against the proposal. The proposition calls for downsizing the town board from four to two council Members. So the board would consist of two council members and the town supervisor. People have been voting all day at the fire hall on Baseline Road. Kevin Gaughan, the advocate behind this, was in the parking lot trying to persuade people to vote for the proposal.
Gaughan said, "The whole purpose of downsizing government is to increase citizen voice."
"It's only gonna save taxpayers $10 per $100,000 assessment and they want two people to make all of our decisions? That's why I voted no," said Susan Rowles.
Residents can vote until 9 Friday night.
