New info expected on fatal DuPont blast

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Within hours, we're expected to learn more about Tuesday's deadly blast at the DuPont plant in the Town of Tonawanda.

Roswell Avenue Resident Jerry Brundage said, "I thought an earthquake or something like that, just a quick one. But it was just one jolt."

Neighbors of the DuPont plant could feel the blast that erupted late Tuesday morning on River Road.

Town of Tonawanda fire and hazmat teams were on scene after an explosion in a storage tank that had once contained the flammable chemical vinyl fluoride.

It was supposed to have been cleaned out before the contractors started their work.

OSHA inspector Arthur Dube said, "It was emptied two weeks ago. There was probably a little bit of some unknown material left in the tank."

The man who was killed and the other who was injured had been contracted from Mollenberg Betz, of Buffalo, to maintain the tank.

Both it and DuPont are said to have excellent safety records.

Dube said, "They fly the OSHA star flag, and it's the best of the best."

At the press conference Wednesday, we should learn what led up to the deadly blast. We also may learn the name of the person who died, and the name and condition of the worker who was sent to the hospital.
