ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WIVB) - An overnight standoff in Orchard Park ended tragically Monday morning in a quiet neighborhood.

Callie Maloney said, "Keep your doors unlocked kind of neighborhood, you know?"

Neighbors like Maloney on Larned Lane in the village of Orchard Park in one night went from being able to keep their doors unlocked to being locked in their own houses.

"They said they we were really close to the scene and we needed to get into the basement. We have a baby and stay away from whatever was going on," said Maloney.

Jerry Severino said, "We were not supposed to be outside. As a matter of fact, we were in virtual lockdown."

Orchard Park Police Lt. Mark Pacholec says the strict rules and perimeters around the neighborhood were necessary because they arrived at a home at 9:40 p.m. Sunday night to find a distraught man standing outside holding a rifle.

"You don't know what anybody's capable of," said Lt. Pacholec.

Police say they had never been called to this home before. And although the man, who neighbors say has a young wife and child, ran into his home when they got there, it was still a tense situation for all.

Maloney said, "I could see some policemen in the trees with guns hiding out. So I was really kind of nervous."

"The policeman came over the loud speaker and told the gentlemen to put his gun down and come out with his hands up. Naturally kind of a crazy experience," said Severino.

Sadly, it didn't end that peacefully. Police entered the home just before sunrise to the find man had taken his own life.

Maloney said, "You think you're in a safe neighborhood, but you just never know who's around you, which is scary. It's really scary."

For the sake of the man's family, Orchard Park Police aren't releasing details about how the incident started or what ended it.
