BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Schools in Amherst, Sweet Home, Cheektowaga and Buffalo are all back in session.
Some students returned to a new and improved building. The skyway at City Honors is like a time capsule sending students from the old to the new. The $43 million edition was paid for mostly with your dollars. It’s part of the 1$.4 billion Joint Schools Reconstruction project.
Inside the glass walls there is a new gym, basketball court and a huge eight lane swimming pool. City Honors Principle Williams Kresse says 450 fit into the pool area. He says it should be finished by the end of October. To help students’ breath a little easier, a new air system was installed.
“In addition to the pool and the gym we’ve also added a new school library, six new computer labs, an all new arts corridor, and a special transition area for our 5th and 6th graders and an entirely new science center,” said Kresse.
The principal says there have been discussions between Buffalo Public Schools and the Housing Authority regarding the abandoned property across the street. Kresse says eventually they want to transform the land into a play field for the City of Buffalo.
City Honors senior Ingrid Burgos says seeing the school expand is exciting.
“I mean freshmen it was going to a new school but senior year I’m excited to see all my friends and a new building that we get to graduate from,” said Burgos.
Buffalo Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams shares his student’s enthusiasm. He says upgrades will positively impact students and teachers.
“I’m just so pleased for this community and for the students of the Buffalo Public School system. They get to be educated in the best buildings with the highest technology and some great teachers and support staffs in these buildings,” said Dr. Williams.
Principle Kresse says the new building will encourage students to stay on the right track and stay in school.
