Double sign on Rt. 400 confuses drivers

WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A pair of signs are getting a lot of attention from drivers on Rt. 400, who are confused why a new sign was erected right behind an older sign, and then the older sign was left up.

State transportation officials tell News 4 they are replacing the old sign in the front, but after the contractor installed the new sign behind it back in late December, bad weather set in.

NY DOT Spokesman Susan Surdej said, "And by the time the new sign was installed, the weather was not conducive for removing the old sign, and at that point, the contractor was done for the season because of weather conditions."

Surdej saus the double-sign is part of a half-million-dollar contract with a Syracuse-area company to replace signs along the 400 and the Scajaquada Expressway.

While this sign seems to have a lot of good years left on it, Surdej says the contract calls for replacement of all the guide signs at the Transit Road intersection for continuity purposes.

"It looks kind of strange right now, but it is just for a short period of time, until the weather breaks and the contractors can go out and start installing foundations, and removing foundations, and then it won't be a problem any more," Surdej said.

The project calls for all the signs at the 400 and Transit Road junction to be replaced by July.
