Chemical explosion in Tonawanda

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A chemical explosion was reported late Tuesday morning at the DuPont plant on River Road, in the Town of Tonawanda according to officials.

Early reports indicated that one person may be killed when an outside tanker containing a potentially dangerous chemical has reportedly exploded.

Initially police urged nearby residents to stay inside and keep their doors and windows closed due to the potential danger from the chemical but before 1pm Town of Tonawanda Police say residents were once again safe to go outside.

According to police, there are no evacuations that they know of.

First responders from across the area are rushing in to help.

Residents from the area say they heard and some even felt the explosion just after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
