Flu season is also "stomach bug" season

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - This time of year might be known as flu season, but the Erie County Health Department is reminding western New Yorkers to beware the stomach bug!

The norovirus is highly contagious and can infect anyone at any time. It's commonly known as the "stomach bug" or "food poisoning" and has symptoms that include nausea, cramping, vomiting, and diarrhea. Less common symptoms are low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and a general sense of fatigue.

Health officials say 1 in 15 Americans catch the stomach bug each year. Most people get better in a day or two. There is no vaccine or medication to treat the illness, so the best offense is a good defense.

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein said, "Frequent hand-washing is the most important health tip for all of us to remember so that we don’t spread illness. Wash your hands carefully with soap and water especially after using the toilet and changing diapers, and always before eating, preparing, or handling food."

For more information on the norovirus, visit the fact sheet page from the NYS Department of Health.
