TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - The City of Tonawanda is finally reclaiming a long abandoned industrial site for new uses.

Eight years of remediation work have cleared the former Spaulding Fibre site for re-development. Federal and state funds contributed to this Greenfield project on Wheeler Street.

"The site was closed and left unfortunately to be on its own since 1992 with four acres of the site being placed on a Superfund list by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and the rest of the site being littered with varying levels of contamination," noted County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

After 20 years, the 47-acre site is now shovel-ready for redevelopment.
