AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Buffalo Sabres are off the ice, but you can still watch hockey this weekend.

The NHL Sled Hockey Classic got underway at the Northtown Center in Amherst on Friday and will run throughout the weekend. The tournament features 14 sled hockey teams sponsored by NHL teams, including several teams made up of U.S. military veterans. The U.S. team has had a lot of success in international competition.

J.J. O'Connor of USA Hockey said, "We won the 2010 Para-Olympics and then we won the 2012 World Championship. We're the first country to win two golds in the Para-Olympics. So our country has seen quite a bit of success."

Western New York has proven to be a hot-bed of sled hockey. Three of the national teams hail from our region.
