Tonawanda residents worried about soil

TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A grassroots group claims it's found toxins in the soil near some industrial sites in the Town of Tonawanda.

The Tonawanda Community Fund presented its findings earlier Wednesday night at the Sheridan Parkside Community Center. The group wants state and federal agencies to make polluters stop putting these substances into the air and the land.

Director Jackie James Creedon said, "We only took a few samples, but we do want the EPA and DEC to come in here and take additional samples. We're concerned that there may be a potential health threat, considering that the New York State Department of Health came out with their study, a couple weeks ago."

That study found there are elevated levels of cancer and birth defects in Tonawanda.
