WEST SENECA, N.Y. (WIVB) - West Seneca is cheering on a hometown hero who has his sights set on Olympic gold in London.

The Olympic flag is flying outside West Seneca Town Hall and will be throughout the Olympic games. And many residents are wearing personalized shirts cheering on Matt Anderson, a native son.

Town Supervisor Sheila Meegan led a special ceremony at Friday, proclaiming it was "Matt Anderson Day" to mark his many accomplishments. He's the youngest member of the USA men's volleyball team. At West Seneca West, he led his squad to the 2004 championship. His team at Penn State won the 2008 NCAA National Championship, and he was named most outstanding player. The town is showing its support in many ways.

"As "Matt Anderson Day" in the town of West Seneca, I encourage all my fellow residents to cheer on the hard work and dedication throughout the Olympic games," said Supervisor Meegan.

Matt's mom, Nancy Anderson, said, "This is wonderful, amazing. I haven't heard from him. He's in lockdown, but that's okay. I'll see him in a couple of days."

Nancy is heading over to the games soon. His team has their first match on Sunday against Serbia.
