WNYers take advantage of hot weather

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Western New Yorkers took advantage of another summery day this Labor Day weekend, just before the kids head back to school.

Even though the temperatures were in the upper 80s, or in some cases low 90s, around western New York, it didn't stop families from getting out and enjoying the unofficial end of the summer. Many were getting out one last time before everyone is back in school.

One of the busiest places on Labor Day was the Buffalo Zoo, which had more than 10,000 people come through their turnstile.

Michael Powers, the zoo's marketing manager, said, "It's just a big end of summer party we can do for the community. It's our special "dollar day," which is a tradition at the zoo going back almost a couple decades now."

Many thrill seeking families also headed to Martin's Fantasy Island. Amusement parks industry-wide are down in attendance by double digits. But no one's complaining in Grand Island..

Ray Wigel of Martin's Fantasy Island said, "We were very fortunate this year. So it's been a good summer."

Wigel says that's due to the lack of rain this year. The KOA campground in Grand Island says business is up 25 percent.

General manager Ginny Rader said, "Oh it was awesome. We didn't have any rainouts at all this year. It was just wonderful. Other than it being brown and dry, but it was great."

But that wasn't the case for Buffalo City Pools. Labor Day is also the last day of the year for the swimming season, and according to a city spokesperson, attendance was down by more than 8,000 people this year. Some believe people are turning away due to the violent summer we saw.

Veronica Mercado said, "I think they're scared because of the criminals and all of the stuff going on. So I think it's that."

All area schools will be back in session this week, so keep in mind kids will be crossing the streets and buses could slow down your morning commute.
