BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A former state court law clerk will avoid prison time for transporting an illegal alien across state lines to work as a prostitute.
Law clerk Michael Stebick left federal court in a hurry.
News 4's Jericka Duncan asked, "Are you sorry for what you did?"
Michael Stebick said, "Oh yeah, absolutely."
Stebick is "sorry" for getting caught up in a scandal, one that involved a prostitute and members of his fraternal organization "The Royal Order of Jesters."
In 2005, Stebick and his former boss, retired State Supreme Court Judge Ronald Tills, went to Kentucky for a Royal Order of Jesters meeting.
According to prosecutors, a woman accompanied them with the intent of engaging in sexual acts with members, in exchange for money.
That's illegal.
Stebick's attorney Joel Daniels said, "Mike was a small player in this event. He had drove down his motor home down to Kentucky. He had absolutely no contact with the young lady."
Judge Skretny sentenced Stebick to two years probation with conditions: that include wearing an ankle bracelet for, four months, registering as a sex offender and paying a five thousand dollar fine.
Stebick apologized to his family in court.
His stepmother, his son and brother offered their support.
Stebick's brother Paul Stebick said, "I'm just happy with everything that happened."
A reporter asked, "Do you think probation was fair?"
Paul Stebick said, "I think so."
...a fair sentence in which a longtime respected attorney faces humiliation and embarrassment.
Daniels said, "He's paid a high price for what happened."
Retired Judge Ronald Tills and retired Lockport Police Captain
John Trowbridge also pleaded guilty to involvement in the case.
