BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) - It looks like the end is near for a Catholic Church in Batavia.
Tuesday night the Ascension Parish Council recommended St. Anthony's close its doors by January 1st. Sacred Heart and St. Anthony's merged to form Ascension Parish in 2007. But both churches remained open, putting a financial strain on the parish.
Parishioner Marilyn Dickinson said, "They needed to give us this information before tonight. I don't think they jumped the gun. I think they've been working hard. But we needed to know more. There was a lack of communication with the parishioners. But what if people start coming to church again? They don't have a strategic plan in place to accommodate that. We're just downsizing and not thinking out of the box."
The recommendation to close St. Anthony's will now go before Bishop Richard Malone.
