Batavia denies tax cut to keep jobs

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) - A controversial program in Batavia has been put out to the curb.

The city council rejected a plan Monday night to begin a new garbage tote program. Making the switch would have cut property taxes by 16 percent, but it also would have laid-off adults with disabilities who work for Genesee ARC. The company's been picking up the city's garbage for three decades.

>> Hundreds came out in prior meetings to voice their support for ARC and its employees

Batavia City Manager Jason Molino said, "We were asked to put together a responsible budget. We did that. Sometimes things change and as such the council has given us different direction to change in tune. That's what we'll do."

City leaders will meet again Wednesday to decide what to do next.
