BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Come June 1st, people living in the City of Batavia will have to get rid of their own garbage.

The City Council has signed off on a plan to extend the city's garbage collection contract with Genesee ARC until May 31st after residents rose up in anger over a proposed contract with an out-of-state contractor.

MORE | Had residents approved the deal, it would have meant a 16 percent property tax cut. But residents wanted to keep the contract with ARC and keep jobs local

But after the extension ends, it will be up to residents to get rid of their garbage by taking it to the transfer station in the town or by contacting a private service.
