Car hits home, stops feet from bed

BATAVIA, N.Y. (WIVB) - Police say a drunk driver crashed into a Batavia home over the weekend and family members say it's incredible no one was killed.

The Hutchinsons are still unnerved after a car crashed into their Main Street home. The rude awakening came just after 5 in the morning Saturday. Police say the driver was going through the traffic circle, hit a light post and several street signs, continued on and hit a snow bank and still had enough speed to keep going forward into their home, stopping just feet from a 10-year-old's bed.

Chris Hutchinson was at home with his wife and two young children at the time. He says right away he could smell a natural gas leak and saw an individual trying to run away.

"My wife is screaming, 'Get back here, don't run away, my children are in this house.' And I immediately told my wife to get the kids out of the house and I went after the individual who was running down the street with a liquor bottle in his hand," Hutchinson recalled.

Batavia City Police say 22-year-old Corey Goff of Rochester is now charged with driving while intoxicated, speeding, refusal to take a breath test, reckless driving, and other charges.

Hutchinson said, "His bed is literally five feet from that wall. The wall is cracked along the baseboard. My biggest fear is, what if he hadn't hit the street signs? What if he didn't hit that street pole and what's there to slow him down?"

"You're not safe in your own bed. It feels like you have to avoid the drunk drivers in the streets let alone in your home where you think you're safe," he added.

Goff was given an appearance ticket. The family says this is the second incident to happen on their street, which makes them think it may be time to move. In 2010, a man driving a pickup truck who was fleeing from police crashed into a home on South Main Street.
