EPA: LeRoy material is non-hazardous

LeROY, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Environmental Protection Agency has released the results of sample testing taken from 80 of the 240 drums of soil and rock material at the Lehigh Valley Railroad Derailment Superfund site in LeRoy.
The train derailment resulted in some 30,000 gallons of liquid trichloroethene (TCE). 80 of the 240 drums was tested for that material. The EPA says in all of the cases, the results show the material in the drums is non-hazardous.
TCE was detected in one drum at a concentration of 0.2 parts per million (ppm), which the EPA says is below health-based levels.
There were also no detectable levels of cyanide in any of the drums.
The EPA tested the drums to determine an appropriate facility to take them to for disposal. The organization stated the analysis is ongoing and they will make the results available as information is returned.
The drums will then be taken to a permitted facility.
