BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Get a hookah and hang out.

That's what's happening at a local cafe.

"You just get the flavor in your throat and through your nose."

For centuries, men in the middle east have gathered around hookahs to puff fruit scented smoke.

In recent years, it's become the social thing to do in coffeehouses and cafes.

Is it safer than other forms of smoking?

"I've heard that at least carbon monoxide levels actually go higher."

But the smooth, flavored steam from these water pipes seems to be on the rise.

"It tastes like cigar smoke."

What are the dangers?

And can it be smoked in a public place like we found happening here?

New 4's Luke Moretti investigates and will have more on Channel 4 News on Monday at 5:00 p.m.
