ALBION, NY (WIVB) - The repair tab for the sinkhole that closed the Erie Canal for weeks this summer is a whopping $1.3 million.
A portion of Albion-Eagle Harbor Road collapsed on July 30, forcing the closure of the Albion section of the canal for 2 and a half weeks while repairs were made.
Water had to be drained from the canal between Middleport and Holley to allow the work to be done.
Engineers discovered a damaged culvert pipe located 9 feet below the bottom of the canal that they believe triggered the collapse.
