FORT ERIE, ONT. (WIVB) - Canadian border agents have taken in two major hauls of illegal tobacco at the Peace Bridge and Lewiston Queenston Bridge.
Canada Border Services seized a total of $3.4-million in loose tobacco hidden in containers with different labels.
On January 16 a truck driver was stopped on the Lewiston Queenston Bridge with 132 boxes labeled as recycled paper. Upon examination it turned out to be raw cut tobacco with a value of about $1.7 million.
The same day a sea container being transported over the Peace Bridge was found to have 99 boxes of loose tobacco with a value of $1.7 million.
The investigation continues and no charges have yet been laid.
