BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Defending your computer against the bad guys is getting tougher and tougher. There are new challenges facing the people who fix your PC.
Computer expert David Milton said, "It's the worst I've seen it and I've been doing it for 30 years."
A surge in viruses and malicious software, or "malware," are keeping computer technicians busier than ever.
"Problem in industry is how to we keep viruses from making us look stupid," said Milton.
And viruses are nastier than ever. Milton says even the most expensive anti-virus software can't protect your computer 100 percent.
Milton stated, "I think the industry is embarrassed. For the longest time, they had a handle on these viruses, and now they don't."
Milton estimates about two percent of virus now use stealth technology. "Coming down in multiple parts," explained Milton, which allows the virus to avoid detection. Repairing an average of 50 computers a week, Milton is seeing more of what he calls the, "buy me virus."
Milton describes, "Pop-up you can't get rid of."
A pop-up warns you've been infected, and offers the anti-virus software you have to buy. It's comparable to extortion on the internet.
"They are the ones who developed the virus, but their own anti-virus product won't get rid of virus they gave you," said Milton.
The virus can block your internet access. If you buy the bogus fix, the virus creator now has your credit card number, information on your identity, plus the fee you paid. While anti-virus software may not provide 100 protection, it's still important.
Milton said, "Because you have anti-virus, only two percent is going to affect you. Two percent is better than 100 percent."
